FAQ

Who are we?

We're Some Sun®-- we make cute sun protection UPF clothing to make protecting your skin easy. Our classic styles are designed to blend in with your existing wardrobe, so you can protect your skin everywhere.

What is UPF clothing?

UPF measures the amount of UV radiation that can penetrate fabric and reach your skin. UPF clothing is designed to block UVA and UVB rays, the rays that cause skin damage. Most summer clothes and fabric don't provide enough sun protection.

Our sun protection clothing is 3rd party certified to ensure the fabric's protective factors are working properly.

How are we different from other UPF clothing brands?

Most sun protection, sun resistant, UPF clothing brands develop clothes in unflattering styles and colors and are made cheaply. We make sun protective clothing that is on trend, but classic, appealing colors with high quality fabrics and composition. Since we wear sun protective clothing most days when the sun is out, we want styles to look and feel great in.

What does UPF mean in clothing?

UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) measures how much UV radiation can penetrate fabric to reach your skin. A UPF 50 garment blocks 98% of UV rays. The higher the UPF, the better the protection.

What’s the difference between UPF and SPF?

SPF measures how well a sunscreen protects skin from UVB rays, while UPF measures how well fabric protects against both UVA and UVB. Think of SPF as skin protection, and UPF as fabric protection.

Do I need to wear sunscreen if I’m wearing UPF clothing?

You don't need sunscreen under UPF 50+ clothing, but you should still apply it to exposed areas like your face, neck, and hands. UPF clothing simplifies your routine by reducing how much sunscreen you need.

Does all clothing offer sun protection?

Not all clothing protects equally. Most everyday fabrics, especially light, sheer, or loosely woven ones, offer little UV protection unless specifically designed with UPF.

What UPF rating is best?

A UPF rating of 50+ is considered excellent protection, blocking 98% of UV rays. Look for certified UPF labels to ensure the fabric was properly tested.

Does UPF clothing protect against both UVA and UVB rays?

Yes. UPF-rated clothing is tested to block both UVA (aging) and UVB (burning) rays, making it one of the most complete forms of sun protection available.

Can you still get sun damage without getting a sunburn?

Yes. UVA rays, which don’t cause burns, penetrate deeply and cause premature aging and DNA damage. Sun damage accumulates over time—even if your skin doesn’t redden.

Does UPF clothing lose effectiveness over time?

It can. UPF protection may decrease with repeated washing, stretching, or wear. We provide launder car directions to ensure your UPF will last as long as possible.

Is dark clothing better for sun protection?

Yes, darker colors absorb more UV rays, offering better protection than lighter ones. However, fabric type and weave matter more than color alone.

Does wet clothing protect you from the sun?

Usually not. Wet clothing—especially light fabrics like cotton or linen—can lose up to 50% of its UV protection and may cling to the skin, making you more vulnerable.

Do you need sun protection on cloudy days?

Yes. Up to 80% of UV rays penetrate clouds, so your skin can still be damaged on overcast days. UVA rays are present year-round and aren’t blocked by clouds.

Do car or window glass block UV rays?

Glass blocks UVB, but not all glass blocks UVA, which causes aging and deeper damage. That’s why sun damage can still occur indoors or while driving.

Can you get sunburned in the shade?

Yes, UV rays can reflect off surfaces like water, sand, pavement, and snow, and reach your skin—even in the shade. Shade reduces exposure but doesn’t eliminate it.

Why is UPF clothing better than regular clothes for sun protection?

UPF clothing is specifically engineered and tested to block UV rays, while most everyday fabrics don’t offer reliable protection. It’s a proven, wearable barrier you don’t have to reapply.

Is UPF clothing only for the beach?

No. Today’s UPF clothing is designed for everyday wear—whether you're commuting, walking the dog, traveling, or dining outdoors. Sun exposure happens year-round, not just on vacation.

What gives our clothing its UPF factor?

Our clothing blocks UV rays through a combination of fabric thickness, weave and fiber type. We do not use chemical washes to reach UV factors.

How is our UPF clothing certified?

We complete 3rd-party lab testing to verify the UPF rating on all fabrics.

How to we grade and verify sun protection?

The standard for grading UPF as follows:

For examples. a fabric must have a UPF of 30 to qualify for The Skin Cancer Foundation’s Seal of Recommendation. A UPF of 30 to 49 offers very good protection, while UPF 50+ rates as excellent. At Some Sun®, we only offer UPF ratings of 30 or higher, and we will always clearly note the UPF factor. All of our fabrics are third party tested.

Wet style testing: If the style is intended for the water, by stating such (e.g. swimsuit, rash guard) we additionally 'wet test' the fabric to verify its UPF factor, and choose the lower rating between the dry and wet test, if they are different figures.

Product Disclaimer

Our UPF-rated clothing is designed to provide enhanced protection against harmful UV rays; however, it does not guarantee complete prevention of UV damage or sunburns, as the effectiveness of sun-protective fabrics can vary based on factors such as fit, stretch, wear, and exposure to water, detergents, or other environmental elements.

Additionally, while we maintain high-quality standards utilizing 3rd party lab wet and dry testing, occasional product defects may occur. Over time, the UV-blocking properties of our garments may naturally diminish due to repeated use, washing, and general wear and tear.

For optimal sun protection, we recommend using our products in combination with other sun safety measures, such as broad-spectrum sunscreen, sunglasses, and seeking shade when necessary. If you have concerns about a specific product, please contact our customer service team.
